Ancestral Communion is a fiber relief inspired by the combination of two tarot cards, the Two of Cups and the Sun card. I chose to combine the inspiration of these two cards by creating two figures upholding an ancestral sun within a portal of stairs. The figures represent the Two of Cups tarot card of harmony, relationships, and being able to create connection. I thought it was important to also create a piece that paralleled The Moon piece in that the Sun card is a card of celebration, new beginnings, and recognizing the inner child. To represent this celebration, the figures uphold a multilayered, printed orb that represents the ancestral connection shared that smiles down on them. By going through the phases of embracing the unknown in The Moon, going through Inner Growth, and sharing a connection, I am affirmed by those who share my path in Ancestral Communion. For me, it is important in this journey of understanding myself within Black womanhood to include a piece about the importance of finding connections within the Black community in pursuit of finding the Self. This weight of absence could not be carried alone and within it; I needed to connect with those who share my experience, my reflection, and shared stories to fully manifest how I want to exist in the world.
