Vulnerable is a fiber relief inspired by Gustav Klimt’s painting Danae. I was drawn to Klimt’s reference to the myth, which is centered around an encounter with Divine Love. In Klimt’s painting, the woman is enraptured and content wrapped in the golden representation of Zeus. Reflecting on the painting made me think of how difficult it is to find Black women in an unguarded state of contentment and how hard it is to allow oneself to be loved. For this piece, I wanted to give form to my journey of vulnerability, comfort, and self-love. This inner journey is necessary to give and receive this concept of Divine Love. In making this project, the pose reminded me of child’s pose, a yoga pose that is meant for moments of rest and honoring inaction. It’s as if comfort and rest can’t fully be received because of the gaze that is on guard and looking out to the viewer. The pose also brings awareness to the folds of the body that I especially wanted to highlight and celebrate in my project, as larger bodies are often not accepted and centered as muses.
